Welcome to the History of Parliament’s House of Lords 1660-1832 section. Our current research covers the period 1715-1790, examining the history of the Upper Chamber during the reigns of George I, George II and George III, and features some of the most significant characters of the period. In all the project will produce new articles on 927 peers and bishops. These include several Prime Ministers, among them Sir Robert Walpole (earl of Orford), William Pitt the Elder (earl of Chatham), Thomas Pelham Holles, duke of Newcastle, and Charles Watson Wentworth, 2nd marquess of Rockingham, along with less well-known but equally influential politicians.
Although our focus is on members of the Lords, our research also embraces other themes relating to the parliamentary estate, important political families, and key events, such as the Jacobite rebellions, major international conflicts in Europe, America and beyond, and several high profile trials over which the Lords presided.
